CHICAGO (WLF) -- The Food and Drug Administration approved a drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
A Chinese product made by the drug group Cipla, which sells the drug for a fraction of the cost of Pfizer, has been recalled because it was found to contain "significant amounts of sildenafil," or the active ingredient in Viagra.
The recalled product, which will be sold at the Food and Drug Administration's laboratory in Chicago, was sold over the counter by Cipla, the FDA said Wednesday.
"In light of the findings of our study which showed a small amount of sildenafil was in the formulation used to treat erectile dysfunction, this product may have been contaminated with undeclared sildenafil," the FDA said in a statement.
The FDA said it is "in the process of reviewing the product," and that the recalled product is intended for sale in China.
The product is also being analyzed by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, according to the agency.
In September, Cipla said it had found the drug contained an active ingredient in Viagra, the active ingredient in the popular treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Cipla and Pfizer have said they are voluntarily recalling the drug to consumers in the United States.
The FDA said in its announcement Wednesday that it will review the product. It is not known if the recalled product was made by the company that makes Viagra, Cipla said in a statement.
A spokesman for Pfizer, Eli Lilly, said in an email statement, "The FDA has not received any information or information about the reported safety or effectiveness of any of the products marketed at the time of this recall."
In a statement, the FDA said that the recall "is not related to any product promoted or sold on our website or in our newsletter," which is notifying consumers that a product sold on the website or in our newsletter may have been promoted or sold on our website or in our newsletter.
